In essence, the shotgun read option is a simplified version of the triple option, focusing on a single "read" and two potential ball carriers, while the gun triple option utilizes a more complex system of reads and three potential ball carriers.

A primary goal of this offense is to create numerical advantages in the run game by leveraging the threat of the quarterback run. This often results in a two-man advantage through the addition of an RPO quick pass concept or an option pitch phase on the perimeter.
