The Coverage Menu, Zero Through Six
Defense starts with the coverage. Before a play gets called, before a blitz gets dialed up, somebody has to decide how the back end is going to be built. That is what this page is about — the seven defensive coverages, Coverage 0 through Coverage 6, laid out so you can see them side by side instead of hunting through a playbook for them.

These are the coverages I teach and talk through: Coverage 0, Coverage 1, Coverage 2, Coverage 3, Coverage 4, Coverage 5 and Coverage 6. Each one is a different answer to the same question — where do my safeties go, who has man, who has zone, and what am I giving up to get what I want? Learn all seven and you stop guessing on Friday night.

Coverage 0, 1, 2 and 3
The first four are the ones most coaches meet first, and they are the ones players ask the most questions about. Coverage 0 and Coverage 1 live in the man-to-man world. Coverage 2 and Coverage 3 are where zone principles start doing the heavy lifting behind the front.

When I walk a coach or a player through these, we do not just name them. We look at the picture — where every defender lines up, what he is responsible for, and what the offense is going to try to do about it. A player who understands why he is standing where he is standing plays faster than a player who memorized a spot on a card.

Coverage 4, 5 and 6
Coverage 4, Coverage 5 and Coverage 6 are where a defense gets its flexibility. These are the calls that let you change the math on one side of the field without rebuilding the whole structure, and they are the ones that separate a defense that reacts from a defense that dictates.

Coverage is only half the conversation, of course. The other half is what the offense is putting in front of you. Route concepts and coverage answers are two sides of the same coin — you cannot really understand one without spending time on the other, which is why my teaching goes back and forth between them.

Slants on one snap, go-verticals on the next. Same defense, two completely different problems. Once you can look at a coverage and immediately see which concepts attack it and which ones die against it, you are calling plays instead of hoping.
